The Mariners' Museum and Park, And Mariners' Lake

Address: Boundary Rd, Newport News, VA 23601, USA

Park

“This is absolutely one of the best places in Newport News. It has a wonderful wooded trail (Noland Trail) that circles around Mariners Lake. The trail is about 5 miles long, so it's a good workout if you want to go the distance. Many people run or walk it. Great for dog- walking, not for biking though. There are spots to rest along the way including small piers complete with seating, offering dazzling views of the lake. The museum itself is full of all kinds of wonderful artifacts from maritime history. They also feature special exhibitions and events. Please check their page for current info. Adjacent to the area and part of the museum grounds is Lions Bridge. This bridge, which separates the Lake from the River, is guarded by magnificent sculpted Lions on either side, and from this vantage, you can get amazing views of the James River, as well as Mariners Lake and Kettle Pond. This is favorite spot for locals to watch the sunset. For birders this is an excellent space to view many waterfowl in the area. Ducks, Geese, Heron, Osprey, Eagles, Kingfisher, and a variety of Gulls, Terns, and other birds love to fish the river and nest nearby. Additionally, you will be able to enjoy other Sculpture in the area. Once you visit, you will understand why it's such a wonderful spot. Go! Enjoy!”

Riverview Farm Park Soccer Fields

Address: 125 City Farm Rd, Newport News, VA 23602, USA

Park

“My son plays soccer here. The playground and bathrooms are kept clean. It can be busy with kids and parents on their phones not watching them. We mostly have a good time. Even squeeze in just before the sun sets in the fall and winter in nice days. There is a ton that can be done here. Pinics and barbecue. Playground, fields, tracks and even roll down hills. We have brought kites and all kinds of fun outdoor toys to take advantage of the space.”

Newport News Park Discovery Center

Address: 901 Clubhouse Way, Newport News, VA 23608, USA

Park

“Great place to experience a variety of family & indivual satisfactions. Personally I utilize the golf facilities the most. Otherwise it may be the most underrated/unknown city facility, especially to new inhabitants out there. From golf, 2 courses, to camping to nature walks to water options, canoeing/paddling boats to picnicking to jogging trails to Archery range. These and other options that I'm not familiar with all monitored by a fine staff of park rangers & staff. Know this becuse I liv. e near a much smaller city park which is well maintained most of the time.Bottom line, well worth the time to explore & enjoy.. A welcome release of every day stress for a while. Don't usually respond to these requests but so glad you asked.. HATS OFF TO THE CITY ON THIS ONE!!”

“This is really close to my home so I have been here many times. It's a great historical site and well maintained. The site is not well advertised and a bit hidden for the general public so large crowds are never a problem. Ample parking and easy to navigate walking trail, no bikes allowed on the trails so they aren't torn up. The observation deck was rebuilt a couple of years ago and I good condition.”

“I love it here. It is very peaceful UNTIL someone put a sound Alarm at their garden. That goes off every 5 seconds. I feel like that is inconsiderate to the other gardners. Also against the rules. I still have a headache from that thing.”

The Mariners' Museum and Park

Address: 100 Museum Dr, Newport News, VA 23606, USA

Cafe Park Museum Movie theater

“Completely transformed over the last 10 years to focus on the Monitor as it’s prime exhibit. Includes the turret and a large number of artifacts, plus a full size model of the entire ship outdoors and a full sized model of the turret indoors. The real thing is there undergoing preservation for years with good progress, but you can barely see it since it is under water. Beyond that, it has a huge Americas Cup yacht so big that even its own building is too small, a few small boats that now have an climate controlled warehouse, and an amazing set ships models.”

Address: 828 Kells Dr, Fort Eustis, VA 23604, USA

Campground Lodging Park

“So far so good. The cabin is really cute and functional. Grateful to have the pet friendly option, I believe there is only one cabin designated for it. It's notable that the floors are somehow quite slippery... My kids keep falling (just wearing their socks or stepping on a piece of clothing/ something else that shouldn't have been left there anyway...) I'm not complaining, I figure it may be helpful for someone, especially elderly, to know beforehand so they can bring grippy socks or slippers. I also appreciate the close playground. There is no hand soap, bar or liquid, at either sink. There is dish soap at the kitchen sink however.”

American Tower Corporation

Address: 9642 Sylvania-Petersburg Rd, Ottawa Lake, MI 49267, USA

Store Park

“At this arch you will find a "sacred" fire that burns almost indefinitely and representing it's wealth of historical importance. Entrance upon this stone foundation will surely separate the tourist from the general surrounding of Downtown Newport into a lavishly kept and large open ended park on the way to an outlook over the waters and with a clear view of the Naval carriers, some Maritime patrol on occasion and the company of families, friends and others traveling the walk for sightseeing, fitness or particularly in my case, meditation, a great meditation spot listening to the waters flows and the light hum as evidence of human engineering in the distance that creates an ambient sound and the area is very quiet on Sundays. Tourists may fish at the furthest left end of the park and will find law enforcement monitoring the area briefly for safety & security. A rather nice looking Huntington Ingalls corporate building is low key set aside from the park on the way in. On every 4th of July this park comes to life even more with concessions, a stage for music performances, huge fireworks displays, a local patriotic oldstyle band at the fiery monument, glow sticks and super packed full of people. This is a place to creates your memories with the people you love, your family and your friends. Enjoy it's simplicity, thank me later but most importantly, thank yourselves for embracing the simplicity and historical importance of the monument and Victory Landing Park. Stay for the sunset and take a moment to reset before your departure it's a beautiful sight.”
