Appalachian trail

Address: 26-, 34 Bevans Rd, Sandyston, NJ 07826, USA

Park

“Seems odd to try and review such a huge thing as the AT when I've really only done about 150 intermittent miles of it (scattered through NJ, PA, NH and VA), but still, I hike some sections quite regularly and will comment on those. NE PA, NW NJ are host to a fair length of the AT and the trail through these areas is very well marked and maintained. Very rocky, VERY rocky! A true ankle-turning experience, but if you take your time, injuries can be avoided. Through NE PA, the trail affords few good views, but those that there are are quite pretty. NJ provides more chances to escape the "green tunnel" and see the surrounding areas. If you get the chance, definitely try a section and see for yourself. Facilities are few and far between, but the experience is one that should at least be tried.”

Buttermilk falls parking

Address: Mountain Rd, Layton, NJ 07851, USA

Park

“Great nature all around. Relatively small (vs.Bushkill) but still charming waterfall! Pretty steep trail leading up with no handrails (mostly at the bottom part of a trail). Convenient free parking for 20-25 cars (no fee to see waterfall/climb the trail). Driver be aware - huge potholes! Sometimes as wide as a foot and as deep as 6-8 inches. We drove a sedan and regretted it a million times. But still will be back with a SUV to go all the way up the hill!”

Little Swartswood Lake

Address: Little Lake, Newton, NJ 07860, USA

Park

“Nice little lake with a small boat launch and dock. There are a few picnic tables and grills for picnicking. Parking is just off Newton Swartswood Rd on a dirt road. There is a sign to identify the park. Google Maps directions are wrong. They bring you through a private community. The entrance is by the Church.”

Swartswood State Park

Address: 1091 E Shore Rd, Swartswood, NJ 07877, USA

Park

“Great park and lake...nice clean facilities and picnic areas. Two boat launches, one outside the park that is actually a little easier. The other is by the boat rental, a bit of a steep walk and launch off the dock. Rowboats, Kayaks and canoes to rent. The area around the boat rental and past the swim area was very mucky and covered with algae...hope that clears as the rest of the lake is a beautiful deep blue, clear and sparkling in the sun. Nice fishing spots past the boat rental but seems to fill up early. Also like to check out the boathouse restaurant across from the State Park entrance.”

Paulinskill River Wildlife Management Area
