“I am a 65-year old male who has had minor lower back pain issues since my early 30's. I had always able to resolve those pains with various forms of exercise, stretching and/or rest until I turned 60. That winter, while shoveling snow, I twisted my back in such a way as to generate leg pain that I could not relieve for over 3 months. I then consulted with my general practitioner physician who prescribed an MRI. That revealed multiple bulging discs in my lower back. These were impinging on my sciatic nerve(s), creating inflammation leading to the intense pains. My doctor then referred me to a Pain Specialist, who treated me with a series of 2 separate cortisone shots in the affected lower back area to reduce the inflammation and finally offered relief. This year, the severe sciatica flared up again and before pursuing more shots, I decided to give acupuncture a try. My sister-in-law recommended Dr. Sonia Rivera of Inner Spring Wellness, and at the completion of my first session with her, I experienced enough alleviating sensations to convince me that I was on the right track. After that, further relief has been gradual and consistent over the course of multiple sessions. These included not only acupuncture, but other treatments along with tips and recommendations on, and/or demonstration of, stretching and roller massaging. She also offered advise regarding an anti-inflammatory diet as well as beneficial nutritional supplements. As I began mentioning other relatively minor areas of pain, Sonia said I “had a lot going on” and then performed treatment techniques, as well as offered advise and self-help tips, that have lessened those pains as well. Her wealth of knowledge and the various techniques she applied, along with lessening the pain(s), have also helped instill in me an increased mental and emotional sense of well-being, including more peace and serenity. My cravings for the less healthy foods that were aggravating my condition, as well as my overall health, have eased. I now sleep 7-8 hours per night instead of the 5-6 and sometimes 4 hours that I had been averaging.
