I broke my ankle in 2009 racing motocross which kept me from running for almost 10 years (left ankle would swell like a balloon).

Two doctors recommended lateral ankle reconstruction surgery (using cadaver ligaments) and both said that I would ultimately be needing ankle replacement surgery.
