Climb the steps to the top of one of the best coastal lookout points on the South Shore. Definitely don't miss this spot, tourists and residents alike.

We walked to the monument from a nearby house along the narrow curvy road leading up to the entrance . Watch for cars if walking or biking there. From there a moderately steep driveway leads up through shady woods to the parking area. A ranger on duty let us know that there were small monoculars on a desk inside the base that we could take up to the top with us. A flight of stone steps led us to the entrance to the tall granite tower. A wrought iron spiral staircase wound upward in a tight corkscrew, enclosed in a metal grating for safety. After 145 steps, with no resting area, we arrived at a small circular landing inside the top. The youngest kids and the most out of shape adults in our group were winded, likely from singing "Great Green Gobs..." during the ascent (excellent echo). From the top four small narrow windows look over Duxbury Bay and the adjacent coastline. After peering though them for a while we made our descent, squeezing past a few other climbers on their way up. Outside we wandered around the surrounding lawns, and examined the name of all the counties of Massachusettes engraved around the base. A nice way to spend an hour or so, and kids enjoy the adventure of the climb. Not for toddlers or those who would fail a stress test.

There's been a lot of storm damage the last few years, so there are fewer trees up near the monument, but the trade-off is some great views. Great place to walk our dog, she loves it here, but please remember to pick up after your pup. Poo bags are not available, so bring some.
